Prebiotics and probiotics have beneficial effects on intestines, the immune system, vaginal ecosystem and in some cases even on oral health. Nowadays many companies are appealed by functional food as a new field of application for their own bacterial strains or for newly isolated ones. To be allowed to claim for health correlated effectiveness of their products companies have to ensure that these effects are well founded. Indeed, pre- and probiotics must be demonstrated to remain intact during their passage through the gastrointestinal tract and that they positively influence the microbiota.
